About Us
Nestled in the heart of Singapore’s Little India, Little India Arcade is more than a shopping destination — it is a living tapestry of heritage and culture. Housed within beautifully conserved neoclassical shophouses dating back to 1913, the Arcade carries the soul of the early Indian settlers who gave this quarter its colour and enduring spirit.
Lovingly restored and reopened in 1995, it preserves its original charm while welcoming a curated world within — traditional shops, artisanal crafts, textiles, jewellery, and authentic Indian dining, all under one historic roof.
A wholly owned subsidiary of the Hindu Endowments Board (HEB), Little India Arcade does more than manage property – it safeguards a cultural treasure, sustaining these century-old shophouses as a living showcase of Singapore’s Indian community, beloved by locals and travellers alike. The HEB itself plays a pivotal role in preserving heritage, supporting community development, and facilitating religious observance.
Façade Motif – Identified Architectural Elements
This motif is a fine example of Straits Eclectic (Neo-Classical) façade ornamentation, commonly seen on early 20th-century commercial shophouses in Singapore. The LIA Building, constructed in 1913, reflects this architectural style—blending European Classical elements with decorative motifs that convey modernity, permanence, and commercial respectability.
The composition features a stylised finial at the top, an oval cartouche at the centre, and symmetrical acanthus leaf scrolls on either side. These elements, rooted in Classical design, create a balanced and refined façade typical of mercantile architecture from circa 1910–1930.
Overall, this motif highlights the intricate craftsmanship and subtle detailing that contribute to the rich architectural heritage of Little India Arcade.
